Is it me or are a lot of web designers too rigid in their design ideas. I recently went in to consult for a firm on the creation of their website and I had the opportunity to work with a well established web designer out of Orlando. Although I would say the overall experience was positive, I also found that the web designer was not very flexible with his design ideas. Keep in mind the web designer had about 10-12 years of experience but was very limited in terms of SEO knowledge. (Whisper) He thought meta keywords was all SEO was about.
For me, the key to creating a great looking, optimized website, is having a balance between web design & SEO design. Having a strong internal link structure is key. Well, lets just say he wasn’t interested in adjusting his design to accommodate me. Was it arrogance? Or was he just so old school he didn’t understand the importance of what I was trying to accomplish. There were so many images and graphics…..grrrrrrr.
Well lets just say, in the end, the owner of the company put a little more value into what I had to say than the web designer. He saw that at the end of the day, more traffic would benefit him more than a prettier website. He incorporate a lot of my ideas to the chagrin of the pompous web designer.
I’ve been involved in SEO for about 7 years and I’ve seen this attitude a few more times than I would like. But why? I mean, even after 7 years I know that there is always more to learn and I’m always open to new ideas and strategies. Why can’t web designers be?
